The Gambling Toad by TheHerdman The Gambling Toad by TheHerdman
You take in the familiar sights and sounds: the passing of coin, the shuffling of cards, a faint haze of smoke in the air and "Ante Up!" croaked across the gambling house halls. It seems that the Toads never cease to find a trick that will stack the deck in their favor. "Are you in or are you out Buddy?"

I always loved catching toads as a kid. When I decided to do a quick study on the little amphibians it only seemed to make sense to make a few little fantastical twists. Let me know what you think!

Hahaha w00t! w00t!  This is amazing! I wish the colors were a bit lighter but it's great like this. :D (Big Grin)

Thanks! I tend to gravitate towards darker colors for some reason when I've been painting lately but it does wash out shadows sometimes lol.

It's kind of funny. Your toad reminds me of Ghibli Studios magical creatures. But again, great damn job! :dummy:

What a compliment, if I can one day do stuff as innovative and great as Ghibli I will feel blessed. Thank you so much and keep making great art!

This made me chuckle. I think he's well characterized. I like the texture of his skin more than the wood however. I would love to see this in even more detail. As in, a scene, props, and all the works. I like it. I do think his eyes a re too dark really. I think toad eyes are brighter than that (unless it's because he smokes?).

Nicely done.

Thank you! I wish I had spent more time on the wood texture and background overall, and I really want to redraw this once I am more comfortable in my digital painting  skills. I will let you know if I ever do and add "all the works " I am a dummy! .

I used to catch toads as a kid, too! I make it my business to save toads from any little kids who don't yet understand that the creatures have feelings; I hold them for them and show off how cool the little guys are. :D

Now with this picture, I absolutely LOVE the newsie cap on this guy! The perfect persona to give to a toad. I never thought about it before, but there is something oddly toad-like about those characters, and I do mean that in a good way!

I would urge you to work on backgrounds. Even just a bit of texture can go a long way! But I love the little nubs on his "warty" skin and the puffy shape of this pipe smoke. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for sharing your love of toads (I used to catch them as a kid as well and have always been fond of them) and for all the compliments. I am just getting back into art after a long college hiatus, and backgrounds have been a bit of a struggle for me. Do you have any resources or general advice you would give on better executing them?

Honestly, I'm not so great with backgrounds either! My only advice at the moment would be to sketch the background before even thinking about touching the foreground. It's no use trying to build a world around the character. The character lands in the world.

Great art, but it can use more detail to enhance the vision of the amphibian's image more for the viewers. This is an art piece meant for creativity and fun purpose, but just adding what i think can make it better, great point made on liking toads and then representing them here in a funny manner.

By detail do you mean scaling and texturing of the toad, or do you have other details in mind?

As soon as I saw this picture, the lyric "You gotta know when to hold 'em...know when to fold 'em," popped into my head.  :D  This is such a fun, charming picture of a toad in a saloon.  Thanks for sharing.  (I'm in Project Comment, by the way.)
